Biographical Notes
Guy Laurence was born in Guildford Surrey but was brought up in Ireland on the shores of Cork harbour. He was educated in the city Grammar School.
At the age of 16 he started to make his living as an entertainer, working in variety and singing with small dance bands. This came to an end when the family returned to England in the 1950s He did a variety of jobs for the next few years.
In 1965 he married Pat and decided it was time to get a proper job and became a journalist. This eventually led to the offer of a job in Dublin editing a monthly magazine and reporting on “The troubles” for a press agency.
By this time Guy and Pat had a son, Adam and a daughter, Nicola. It was then that Guy started his serious involvement with photography. in the mid 70s they returned to England and settled in the North East where he worked as a freelance in print journalism but found new spheres of activity in commercial radio.
By the beginning of the 80s Guy began to specialise in Religious Affairs journalism and joined the Religious programmes department of Tyne Tees TV in Newcastle upon Tyne. Eventually becoming their senior on-screen interviewer. This was probably the busiest period of his life as he spent some time commuting across the Atlantic to the U.S.A where he presented The Sound of Britain on a network of radio stations, a programme which was recorded in England for American audiences. Frank Ifield was a regular guest on the series.
As the 90s moved on Guy took time to do an honours degree in Psychology at the University of Sunderland and on graduation took a major decision which involved a complete change of lifestyle. He became a Baptist Minister. His ministry began in the North East and he spent a short while as minister of a church in Bradford. Eventually he was called to Cross Street Baptist Church in Islington, London, where he also took the post of Borough Dean.
In 2004 Guy and Pat came to live in Whitstable, it was not quite retirement as he almost immediately was appointed as Ecumenical officer for Kent. Christian unity has been one of his passions for many years.
At the moment Guy is Chairperson of Canterbury Photographic society which he enjoys very much.
He and Pat have four grandchildren all living in London and a Springer Spaniel called Benji completes the family.
